To craft a savings plan, you'll need to know how much tuition and fees will likely run. Here's a good starting point

Here's a look at how tuition costs have increased over a five-year period for some top-rated universities around the country. Just how much is saved by attending a public vs. a private institution? What might tuition look like five years from now? The following slides will help you plan.
Remember, tuition costs don't include other expenses for a college education, such as housing and food, books, and incidental fees, which can vary from $100 to nearly $7,600 at some schools, such as The University of Massachusetts,
Amherst.

Northeast:Rutgers University at New Brunswick

Chartered in 1766, Rutgers is the eighth-oldest college in the nation. Designated as The State University of New Jersey, the Rutgers University system is made up of 29 degree-granting schools and colleges, 16 of which offer graduate programs of study. The New Brunswick campus is one of three. The others are located in Camden and Newark.

Northeast: Yale University

This private, independent institution was founded in 1701. The school received 19,682 undergraduate applications for the 2004-05 academic year. Of those who applied, only 10% were accepted to Yale College's freshman class. Located in New Haven, Conn., this highly selective university comprises an undergraduate college, a graduate school for arts and sciences, and 10 professional schools.

Northeast:University of Massachusetts at Amherst

Located 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City, UMass Amherst is the flagship campus of the five-campus University of Massachusetts system. The university offers 88 bachelors degree programs, 68 masters programs, and 50 doctoral programs in 10 schools and colleges. Twenty-three of the school's sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level.

Northeast:Sarah Lawrence College

Often topping lists as one of the most expensive colleges in the U.S., this small liberal arts school is located just 15 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The school prides itself on the fact that it offers a much lower student-to-faculty ratio than most other colleges.                  Sarah Lawrence over 30% of tuition fees and other income are allocated to paying for instruction, the largest budgetary expenditure.       So, while tuition may be higher than other private colleges, the school says this is what enables it to maintain its 6-to-1 student-faculty ratio.

Mid-Atlantic:University of Delaware

The University of Delaware is a state-assisted, privately controlled institution. Undergraduates can choose from more than 100 academic majors. The main campus is located in the town of Newark. Within a two-hour radius, students have access to the shore resorts of Delaware, the ski slopes of the Pocono Mountains, downtown New York City, and downtown Washington, D.C.

George Washington University's first commencement occurred in 1824, with President James Monroe, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, and Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette in attendance.
